Plus-minus and who was on the ice

Updated Oct 20, 2026 · 3 min read

When a game has lines, every goal asks one more thing: who was on the ice. That's how Elevate counts plus-minus (+/-). Shots, misses and blocks don't change, and they never ask who was on.

Plus-minus is a PRO feature and needs lines set for the game. See Set up your lines.

How plus-minus is counted

Elevate follows the NHL rules:

  • Even strength goal for - every skater you had on the ice gets +1.
  • Even strength goal against - every skater you had on the ice gets -1.
  • Shorthanded goals count the same way: +1 when you score one, -1 when you give one up.
  • Power play goals don't count for plus-minus, for either team.
  • Goalies never get plus-minus.

Whether a goal counts depends on the power play indicator at the moment of the goal, so keep the PP toggle up to date. The goal sheet shows the strength and one line saying what the goal does, for example "Everyone on the ice gets +1."

Record a goal

  1. Tap the rink where the goal happened, then tap Goal.
  2. Pick your team or the opponent.
  3. Pick the forward line and the defence pair that were on. The sheet opens on the ones you used last in this game (Line 1 and Pair 1 to start). On a power play or penalty kill, it shows your PP or PK units instead.
  4. Check the players under On the ice. For your goal, tap the scorer, then up to two assists.
  5. Tap Confirm goal (or Confirm goal against).

When the line doesn't match

Double shifts and mixed-up lines after a penalty happen. Tap Full roster to see every skater, then tap players on or off. You need at least 3 on the ice and can have up to 6 (6 means the goalie was pulled).

  • For your goal, tap Next: scorer and assists to go back and pick the scorer.
  • For a goal against, confirm right from the roster, or tap Back to lines.

Opponent power play goals

When the opponent scores on their power play, nobody gets a minus. Picking your penalty kill unit is optional, and you can confirm without picking anyone.

Where plus-minus shows up

  • Player page - +/- in the top stats strip and in the Seasons table.
  • Game detail - a +/- column in the skaters table.
  • Analyze - a +/- tab in Roster Analysis to sort your skaters by it.
  • CSV export - a plus_minus column in the player stats export.

Plus-minus only appears once you've recorded who was on the ice for at least one goal. Older games and games tracked without lines don't count toward it.

A few things worth knowing

  • Not sure who was on? Your best guess is fine. It doesn't change the score or anyone's goals and assists.
  • Quick mode skips this step, so games tracked in Quick mode have no plus-minus.
  • Once a goal is saved, who was on the ice can't be changed yet.
